PomaFresh: Guidelines for in-store use
The PomaFresh app helps you select the fruits, vegetables and fish that are ripest and/or freshest among those on display. It does not provide a specific value; rather, it’s a relative measurement comparing all of the products within range of the image. Out of all of these items, it tells you which ones are the freshest or ripest.
You’ll be surprised at the variance in quality within a single product
In general, light gray indicates a fresher or riper product; dark gray is less fresh or less ripe. Below are general guidelines.
- Shelving, overhead fixtures and shooting through packaging materials may affect results.
- In general, you will be surprised at the variance within a single product. A single head of broccoli or cauliflower, for example, will have fresh and not-so-fresh areas. The idea is to image groups of items so that the products can then be compared.
Pineapples have a few selection criteria
Selecting a good pineapple, letting it ripen on your countertop, and then knowing the right time to eat it can be challenging.
- Look for a large white value at the bottom and darker gray area at the top with defined dark checkerboard borders around the eyes.
- In general, the bottom parts of a pineapple are sweetest while the top parts are firmer and less sweet.
- As a pineapple softens, the sweetness reduces only by about 10%. As the pineapple ages the fresh taste is reduced, the acidity improves, and the pulp softens, which affects taste.
Look for pineapples with the brightest bottoms and darkest tops
